Becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is a great way to start a career in healthcare.  CNAs support patients across a variety of healthcare settings, including in hospitals and health systems, nursing homes, outpatient centers, and assisted living facilities. If you are interested in becoming a CNA with a flexible work schedule, here is a step-by-step guide to help you get started.

How to start a career as a CNA

Step 1: Understand the role of a CNA

Before you embark on the journey of becoming a CNA, it's essential to understand the responsibilities of the job. CNAs provide basic patient care, including assisting with activities of daily living such as bathing and dressing. They also take and record vital signs, such as blood pressure and pulse, and assist nurses in caring for patients.

CNAs must be patient, compassionate, and have excellent communication skills. They work with patients who are often in distress, so they must be able to provide comfort and support while maintaining professionalism in various healthcare settings.

Step 2: Meet the eligibility requirements

To become a CNA, you must meet the eligibility requirements for your state. These requirements vary, but in general, you must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED. You may also need to provide proof of immunizations and pass a background check.

Step 3: Find & complete a state-approved CNA program

To become a CNA, you must complete a state-approved CNA program. These programs typically run between four and twelve weeks, and include both classroom instruction and clinical training. You can find state-approved programs at community colleges, vocational schools and healthcare facilities. The program will teach you the skills and knowledge you need to become a CNA, including basic nursing skills, infection control, and patient care. You will also learn about patient rights, and legal and ethical issues in healthcare.

Step 4: Pass the state certification exam

After completing the CNA training program, you must pass a state certification exam. The exam consists of a written test and a skills test. The written test covers the material you learned in the CNA training program, while the skills test assesses your ability to perform basic nursing skills.

Step 5: Get certified and find a job

Once you have passed the state certification exam, you will receive your CNA certification. With a certification, you can then begin looking for CNA jobs. CNAs work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, nursing homes and assisted living facilities. You can also work as a home health aide, providing care to patients in their homes.
